Our Top Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this album might appear more like a challenging university challenge than the latest popular music project from an artist whose previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Split into four different sections and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical change, often through the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone makes the work of contemporary pop stars look rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in avoid dry intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, with sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to fuse the past and modern styles, its ambitions are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. What truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never quite understand—or even want to know—where it is going next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally distinct point than where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins out moody and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the gap between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated on a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its built-in excess. This is a deep source of buried gems that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While other big releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast where the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit between discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
